Life-Giving Lessons in Leadership

Our passage today is from Acts 20:25-32. The church’s sermon is titled “Life-Giving Lessons in Leadership” This is a summary of Pastor Robbie Symons sermon from Hope Bible Church in Oakville, Ontario. Here you can find a summary of last weekend’s message titled An Incredible Heart for Ministry. This week’s whole church service is available in the video below.

Paul’s conversation with the Ephesian elders was almost like someone speaking about what matters most in life while on his death bed. He said he will never see them again. Spiritual leadership is very important and the topic of this sermon. Let’s learn some lessons in leadership.

WATCH the Flock with CARE

Acts 20:28. As a church leader, you can’t relax your guard from the attempts and opposition of the enemy. We always need to pay careful attention to ourselves and the flock. This is important for leadership because how do you ignite someone else’s fire when your fire is out. You can’t teach what you don’t know and you can’t lead where you won’t go. Who do you have as a confidant to care for you and not judge you?

Elders are appointed by the Holy Spirit. It becomes obvious to the rest of the elders when the Holy Spirit chooses a new elder. In recent times, the enemy has been tempting to divide on multiple issues such as:

  • With the pandemic, do we gather or not
  • With the issues of racism

This is the flock and church that Jesus obtained by his own blood.

PROTECT the Flock from WOLVES

Acts 20:29-31. These wolves will appear in sheep’s clothing. Their intent is to kill and destroy. Paul talks about false teachers in so many of his epistles. The Lord cares about the truth. In Acts 20:30, Paul talks about wolves coming from within. In the history of our church, we’ve seen many. The sign is that they speak twisted things to draw away the flock after them. People seeking to create cliques. The pandemic creates isolation which makes the flock vulnerable. The church is God’s design for the protection of the people. Paul warns us of this in 1 Timothy 4:1.

FEED the Flock with the WORD

Acts 20:26-27, 32. Without God’s word we’re done. The word of grace does the following:

  • Sustains Us. Matthew 4:4
  • Grows and Prevails. Acts 19:10
  • Builds Up and Preserves Us. Acts 20:24
  • (Gospel) Is the Power of Salvation. Romans 1:16
  • Creates Faith. Romans 10:17
  • Performs God’s Work in Believers. 1 Thessalonians 2:13
  • Convicts. Hebrews 4:12
  • Gives New Birth. James 1:18
  • Saves Our Soul. James 1:21
  • The Word Has Regenerating Power. 1 Peter 1:23

The word of God is everything. In Acts 20:26, Paul says he’s innocent of the blood of all because he preached the whole counsel of God! This is sobering and profound. Teaching that excludes the word is a crime! Blood is on the hands of such preachers that ignore the word. Millions will stand before the throne of God and realize that they did not know the true gospel.

When Jesus reconnected with Peter at the end of the gospel of John, Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him. Then Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” So if you truly love Jesus, watch over the sheep. This is one of the essential lessons in leadership.
