Easter 2020 – He is Risen!

Jesus is still on His throne this Easter

Today millions celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. However, it’s a very different Easter this time around. We are all celebrating from home as we continue to self distance because of the coronavirus. We did the same for Good Friday. There’s a wonderful poem circulating on social media called “How the virus stole Easter” that I’d like to share with you here. It’s by Kristi Bothur and it is found on her blog. You can watch the YouTube video below. The line I liked the most was:

The churches are empty – but so is the tomb, And Jesus is victor over death, doom, and gloom.

Pastor Robbie Symons from Hope Bible Church in Oakville gave a wonderful sermon today. I’ll summarize it in this post.

1. The Illuminating Power of His Truth – Luke 24:45-46a

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

Luke 24:44‭-‬46 ESV

The world is desperate for truth nowadays. The crisis we are in right now is used to turn our attention to the truth about this life and what it’s all about. There must be more than this life. Here Jesus opened the minds of the disciples to gain a true understanding of the Scriptures. They needed the Spirit of God to illuminate their minds. Information is not enough. Transformation is necessary which happens only by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to Pilate, everyone who is of the truth listens to His voice.

2. The Atoning Power of His Death – Luke 24:46a

and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

Luke 24:46 ESV

Why did Jesus have to die? Because payment had to be made for our sins. That’s why Jesus said on the cross: “It was finished.” Death wasn’t part of God’s original plan. The death of Jesus Christ was necessary that we may never die. Because of COVID-19, we’re all having to look around and face our mortality. This is a definite blessing.

The death rate of the disease of sin is 100%. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. There is no ventilator nor a vaccine nor a sanitizer that can help with sin. There will be incredible joy when a vaccine for COVID-19 is found, but that only delays death. It does not solve the issue of death. Jesus Christ doesn’t delay death, He destroys death!

3. The Overcoming Power of His Resurrection – Luke 24:46c

and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

Luke 24:46 ESV

Jesus is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. In heaven, there will be no social distancing. Every nation and tongue will be gathered to worship the Lamb who was slain and is now alive.

‘But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. ‘

1 Corinthians 15:20-26

4. The Life-Changing Power of His Proclamation – Luke 24:47

and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Luke 24:47 ESV

Jesus starts with repentance because it’s necessary to understand the problem of sin first. You won’t approach the Saviour unless you first understand the need for Him. There is no salvation in any other name except the name of Jesus. This salvation is available for all nations for every tribe and every tongue. Won’t you turn your eyes to Jesus and accept Him as Lord and Saviour today?

Happy Easter, everyone!
