The Faith of Rahab, Fear in Canaan, and Joshua Exalted

Rahab shows incredible faith

The faith of Rahab was incredible. She was a Canaanite and didn’t know much about God. However, she heard from others that the God of Israel is the God of the heavens and the earth. She commented below:

And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. ‘

Joshua 2:11

Fear in the hearts of the people of Canaan

‘And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” ‘

Joshua 2:24

God had already put fear in the hearts of the people of Canaan. He did so with Jericho in particular even before the Israelites entered the land of Canaan.

Parting of the Jordan in the flood season

‘So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as soon as those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest), the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap very far away, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. And the people passed over opposite Jericho. Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan. ‘

Joshua 3:14-17

The Lord was with Moses and exalted him in the sight of all Israel with many miracles. One significant miracle was the parting of the red sea. He did the same with Joshua here by parting the Jordan River. The Lord parted the Jordan at the time of harvest. This is when the river was overflowing. He did so just in case someone might think that this happened naturally due to drought.

Joshua exalted in the eyes of the people

‘On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him just as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life. ‘

Joshua 4:14

Just as God promised, He exalted Joshua in the eyes of the people of Israel.

Rahab, Ruth, and Tamar

Jesus’ genealogy includes three foreign women—Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth. You can learn more about loyal Ruth’s story here.

‘ The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham… and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, ‘

Matthew 1:1,3,5-6

Final words

Let us learn from the faith of Rahab. We have many things that the Lord has done for us in the past. These could be in our own lives or in the lives of people we know. Therefore, when life gets difficult, we can reflect on God’s previous goodness towards us. The people of Israel remembered the Lord’s provisions of Manna in the wilderness over the years. We see that when they tell Jesus how Moses fed them the Manna in the wilderness in John 6:31-33.

God is also able to exalt us in the eyes of those around us if we humble ourselves.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

James 4:10
